This month’s column will be about the twenty-second issue of Instauration. On the front cover it says Vol. 2, No. 9. The issue is dated August 1977. On the front cover is also a picture of Karl Marx.
As always, Page Two is titled “The Safety Valve.” This is where the letters to the editor are printed. One letter reads as follows:
“Before I forget, I really enjoyed ‘Play That Funky Music, White Boy.’ One of the things that contributed to my oddball status during my college days was my constant criticism of pop music. I can remember an economics professor, an old-line socialist — and one of my best friends on campus — defending my views on the subject. He once told a class composed of 19-year-olds that he could not physically stand the sound of that junk. He went on to say ‘it is animalistic’ and, at best ‘represents a return to savagery.’ He didn’t have many friends on campus.”
The feature article of this issue is “Covert Ideology.” The article’s subtitle is “The racial substrate of Marxism.” The article starts out with the following: “It was Carl Jung who said that the idea of a Superego was Freud’s attempt to sneak his national god Yahweh in the back door of Western culture.”
Karl Marx grew up in the Rhineland, which was then occupied by Napoleon, who many Jews considered to be a liberator. Napoleon upgraded the status of Jews. He freed them from the ghetto and opened up many trades and professions to them. When Napoleon fell, many old German territories were restored. They went back to their old policy of sequestering Jews.
Herschel Marx, Karl’s father, was a lawyer attached to the Court. He saved his career by becoming a Lutheran. In 1817 he took on the Christian name of Heinrich and was received into the Evangelical Established Church.
Karl himself was oblivious to the subtleties of religion. He played with the Gentile children of the neighborhood and was accepted as one of them.
Several doors down from Heinrich Marx’s house was the house of Freiherr Ludwig von Westphalen. His daughter, Jenny, was Karl’s playmate. He was a devotee of the vita complativa. He used to walk up and down the streets in a fog of meditation. When he learned that Karl Marx had proposed to his daughter, he blithely gave his consent. This brought loud protests from his relatives, who were acutely aware that Karl was Jewish.
This gave Karl a perfect cover to operate under as he now had a Lutheran father and a Gentile wife. As he pursued his academic career, he got involved with a group called the Young Hegelians. The Young Hegelians promoted all kinds of radical ideas. They attacked government, and they attacked religion. They saw nothing wrong with attacking Jews as well. Karl was welcomed by the group as long as he did not make his own Jewishness an issue.
